10 Dec Common Home Damages during Winter
Winter can be an incredibly difficult time for your home. The harsh elements of a snowy winter can be quite destructive for anyone’s property (especially when it decides to snow here, in Utah). For this reason, it is important to be vigilant and keep an eye out for winter-caused destruction around your home. Many winter-related damages are the type of things that only get worse, the longer you wait to deal with them. Here are some common winter home damages to look out for…
Roof damage
One of the most common damages that we see occur during winter is when ice begins to gather around the edges of your roof, which causes moisture and water to get trapped on your roof, and then subsequently freeze. This is called an ice dam. Ice dams put a lot of stress on your shingles, or any other type of roof material. In some cases, it can even damage your roof and cause leaking. To prevent this, you need to make sure that your attic is insulated from the rest of your home, so that it stays cold. This prevents warm air from getting up to the roof, which causes the snow to melt and freeze into ice.
Floods from melting snow
Ideally, you checked your foundation for any cracks before winter began. However, if you didn’t, then you might be in for a rude surprise when the snow banks start to melt. All of that water needs somewhere to go, and if there is any type of entrance into your basement, then you might wake up one day in late winter to discover that your property and belongings have experienced harsh water damage.
Broken pipes
Another incredibly common winter damage that homes experience occurs when the plumbing system is exposed to cold air. This causes the pipes to freeze. Frozen pipes can cause a litany of different damages. At best, it will just cause fluctuations in your water pressure. However, at worst, it will cause the moisture in the pipes to expand to the point where the ice causes the pipes to break. Once this ice thaws, it will then be a major source of flooding in your home, and could be very expensive to fix. To prevent this, make sure that you keep your home temperatures from dropping too low, and seek professional help the second you see that your pipes are freezing.
