Handyman Projects for Winter Preparedness

The start of the holiday season means a lot of different things. It means turkey dinners with cranberry sauce, shiny presents with big bows, and snuggling up with loved ones while sipping hot chocolate. There are so many things to enjoy about the holidays. It definitely puts a damper on the holidays if you suddenly find yourself unable to properly enjoy them because suddenly little things keep going wrong around the house. Things break and need repaired, and that’s normal! Make sure you’re prepared this winter season, and have a handyman come and make sure your home is cozy and ready for the holidays.

Make sure your fireplace is working

If you have a fireplace in your home, you’ll need to make sure that it’s functioning properly before you begin using it. This seems like a no brainer, but you would be surprised by the amount of people that start fires in their fireplaces before checking to make sure that the flue is opened and can start house fires this way.  If you’re not quite sure how to go about doing this, have someone come and inspect your hearth.

Check your carbon monoxide levels

During the winter, you use your heater and stove a lot more often than any other time of the year. In addition to that, your water heater is working extra hard, you’ve got your fireplace going, and the furnace is running. This can cause a carbon monoxide buildup without you even realizing it. Luckily, it’s really easy to get the carbon monoxide levels in your home tested. Your handyman can bring you a carbon monoxide level tester that you can keep in your home all season, to make sure your home is always within safe levels.

Prep your windows for winter drafts

When it’s cold and frigid outside, you want it to be toasty warm and inviting inside. One way to ensure that your home stays warm like it’s supposed to, is to ensure that your windows are strong enough to not left cold drafts in. There are a few easy fixes to this, and it all comes down to making sure that your windows are well insulated and sealed off properly so nothing gets in that shouldn’t. Having properly insulated windows will also help you out when summer comes around again. Windows that keep the unwanted cold out will also help keep the unwanted heat out, as well, which will help you maintain a comfortable home temperature year round.
